At long last, the return of this popular opportunity to converse with other designers and educators. It will be Talking Spaces number 10! Over the previous nine years we have built a tradition of this event facilitating great conversations between designers, educators and researchers. That successful strategy is being re-invigorated after a 2-year COVID break; three speakers, two specialist sessions, three discussion panels, two site visits, and drinks and networking will be hosted by Steelcase at Flex workspace.
Focus
Enjoy two days of re-engaging with colleagues and discussing the issues that are most pressing at present – what are the emerging school design imperatives, how can educators leverage the affordances of new learning spaces?
- Specialist presenters will give practical examples of those issues in action.
- Panels will explore recent research advancements during the last two difficult years and hypothesise what new learning needs to happen for us to re-engage with our field.
- Special interest groups will interrogate new initiatives at the intersections of industry and academia.
Venues
It will be a fascinating ‘walk-around’ event, with sessions on Thursday and Friday morning hosted in the Melbourne School of Design (Glynn Davis Building), in Arts West’s special ‘in the round’ Forum Theatre, and in the exciting new Melbourne Connect building (co-sponsored by Clarke Hopkins Clark). Drinks will be held at historic University House, Professors Walk.
The two school visits will include Port Melbourne Secondary College and Wurun Senior Campus. A drinks and conversation event will be hosted by co-sponsors Steelcase at Flex workspace.
Student precinct project
The Student Precinct Project is a once-in-a-generation infrastructure project for the University of Melbourne – one that will have a transformative impact on the student experience for decades to come.
The UoM Student Precinct is the first infrastructure development of its kind for the University, being fully co-created through collaboration between designers, students and staff. Ideas and expertise in a range of fields informed the planning and design of the project. The newest facility, the Arts and Cultural Building, is the most recent building to be launched as part of the project.Including a diverse range of indoor and outdoor spaces, both formal and informal, for students to learn and connect, this space encompasses all that is current in innovative space design.

PORT MELBOURNE SECONDARY COLLEGE
Port Melbourne Secondary College is the first substantial piece of social infrastructure to be built as part of Australia’s largest urban revitalisation project at Fishermans Bend. The building is a visually striking vertical school for advanced technology, creativity, and learning, serving as a new, forward-thinking precinct for students and the surrounding community. BLP collaborated with the Department of Education, school principals, the community, and the Fishermans Bend Taskforce to design the state-of-the-art building that focuses on student learning and development and both staff and student health and wellbeing.
In tune with the precinct’s innovation and education pathways, the school’s high-tech environment includes a robotics lab, fabrication lab and green screen room to reflect the STEAM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) and provide students with opportunities for enquiry, discussion, and critical thinking. Drawing on BLP’s translational design experience and learnings from our health, mental health, and inclusive schools experience, the building’s malleable indoor and outdoor spaces offer students a choice to engage and learn, socialise, or retreat. The sensory experience of the materials is at the core of the design. The school’s reduced acoustic levels, maximised natural air flow and daylight, and a social and environmental response to planning provide a calm, safe, and responsive setting for all users.
The school establishes a common ground for students, staff, and the community to come together via a freely accessible and welcome ground floor plane with four quadrants that are independent of each other, promoting community connectedness. Port Melbourne Secondary College is a dynamic form looking to the future, designed to adapt and grow with the evolution of teaching and learning, supporting the next generation of students and educators.

WURUN SENIOR CAMPUS
A transformed approach to senior secondary learning
Wurun Senior Campus is a highly sustainable all-electric vertical campus shared by up to 650 students from the senior secondary program partnership between Collingwood College and Fitzroy High School. The new six-level campus supports diverse learning styles and contemporary teaching methods.
By prioritising the student experience and facilitating an inclusive design process, we have united the different schools’ histories and cultures in a ‘whole of school’ solution that integrates with the local community.
The terraced form of the building gives students on each level access to a series of outdoor balconies and rooftop spaces. These maximise fresh air and natural light and provide opportunities for active recreation, outdoor learning, social connection, and private contemplation.
